Tendonitis yoga

Tendinitis is not something to be taken lightly. Without rest, the tendon condition will not heal or will take longer.

In case of tendinitis, athletes must rest... A yogi will also have to make concessions.

Are you passionate about yoga? Your doctor has prescribed at least 3 weeks of complete rest to treat your tendonitis?

A tendonitis that is not properly treated can worsen. You will still be able to continue to enjoy the benefits of yoga until you are fully recovered. Discover our tips, pick up your yoga mat and head to the yoga workshop!

What is tendinitis?

Tendinitis is an inflammation of the tendons. It is a musculoskeletal disorder because the tendon connects a muscle to the bone. The tendon is made up of collagen fibers that can be weakened. Complete rest of the area affected by tendonitis is necessary while the damaged collagen fibers are reconstituted.

Poorly treated tendinitis can develop into chronic tendinitis or lead to tendon rupture. It is therefore important to follow the physician's recommendations to achieve full recovery.

What are the causes of tendonitis?

It appears when the tendon has been overstrained. It particularly affects athletes and people who perform repetitive gestures on a daily basis. A shock can also be the source of the problem.

How can tendinitis be prevented?

It is essential to listen to your body and to listen to the pain you feel, even if it is mild, before it becomes more severe.

When practicing yoga, tendonitis frequently occurs. They are generally due to several factors:

• Insufficient warm-up,
• A poorly executed posture,
• A poor distribution of body weight in the poses,
• The poor management of support points.

It is therefore essential to be surrounded by a competent yoga teacher who can correct your postures and help you adopt the right gestures. A misalignment of the body is a common mistake in yoga that can have serious physical consequences. Using props to ensure proper body positioning can help you avoid certain injuries.

How to do yoga despite tendinitis?

In case of tendinitis, the practice of yoga may be discouraged by your doctor. It is primarily up to him or her to give you medical advice. However, depending on the severity of the tendonitis, you may resume yoga by taking all necessary precautions.

Talk to your yoga teacher. He will be a great help.

Yoga postures can indeed be adapted to spare the weakened tendon. You will also need to perform them gently so that you don't overexert yourself. In short, learn to take your time and to differentiate between discomfort and pain so that you know when to stop so as not to strain your tendon.

For example, if you have tendinitis in your wrist, you can adjust certain poses to avoid over-exerting. Instead of leaning on your hands, leaning on your forearms may be an alternative solution.

Tendinitis in the shoulder, wrist, knee, elbow, hip... All this doesn't mean you have to stop your yoga classes!

On the other hand, you will probably have to change your daily routine and avoid the most difficult postures depending on the tendon affected.

This is not a problem when you know that the posture is also a pretext to develop energy, self-knowledge and awareness. This can be achieved even with simple, beginner's postures.

A good opportunity to discover other aspects of yoga

Yoga is more than just asanas (postures). You are injured and need to take care of your body?

This is an opportunity to open yourself to the other eight pillars of Ashtanga Yoga, as defined in the Yoga-Sutras of Patañjali. They are as follows:

• Pranayama, breathing exercises,
• Yama, the principles that illuminate the relationship with others,
• Niyama, the principles related to the relationship with oneself,
• Pratyahara, to master the senses,
• Dharana, concentration,
• Dhyana, meditation,
• Samadhi, the final state of the unit.

Yoga is more than just a posture. If your tendinitis temporarily prevents you from practicing the Asanas, it is above all an opportunity to discover in more detail this complete philosophy based on the corporal but also spiritual aspect.

Mediation, breathing, inner awareness... Good ways to fight against stress and to regain balance.

One of the essential teachings of yoga is linked to the state of mind: positivity. More than a precept, it is the culmination of the yogi's approach which aspires to find harmony and inner peace. A philosophy that can be found in the different currents of yoga: Ashtanga yoga, Hatha yoga, Iyengar yoga, Vinyasa yoga, Yoga Nidra, Kripalu Yoga...
