Men's yoga outfit

Even when you are a man, the practice of yoga requires that you take care of your clothing to be as comfortable as possible to perform the different postures.

30% of yoguists today are men, compared to 10% a decade ago. A new market is gradually opening up to sales professionals who increasingly offer yoga clothing adapted to men's morphology and expectations. We help you to choose your future yoga uniform to practice without embarrassment.

What kind of clothes should I wear to my yoga class?

As for women's sportswear, you would think that any short sleeve t-shirt or long sleeve t-shirt will do. Likewise, your gym shorts used in the gym should do the trick. Well no!

First of all because when we do a yoga session, we risk sweating! A t-shirt with sleeves might make you uncomfortable with the humidity that will stagnate in your armpits. Perspiration is already not necessarily pleasant, if we can take materials that allow to evacuate it, it's better!

Then, yoga exercises use a lot of stretching to gain flexibility. We bend, we stretch, we find ourselves in upside down postures... Thus, your Bermuda shorts for sports (jogging or gymnastics) will certainly not be stretchy enough.

Even if you are about to start yoga, I advise you to buy clothes designed for asana practice and to put your tracksuit or jogging pants in the closet.

Because even if men don't need a sports bra or a sports bra, you will have to choose :

• Between shorts (cycling style close to the body) or yoga pants with some elasticity to be comfortable in the crotch,
• Between a short-sleeved t-shirt and a sports tank top, in all cases equipped with an anti-perspiration fabric to help evacuate excessive perspiration.

The shorts allow more air circulation and are particularly recommended if you practice Bikram Yoga (or hot yoga). Same with the tank top.

Don't choose clothes that are too loose: your shirt may end up over your head in the dog head down position and your yoga teacher won't be able to check that you are doing the yoga postures correctly.

When it comes to underwear, the choice is yours. Some people are boxers fans while others will prefer briefs like Rafael Nadal to tennis ;) Avoid the wide boxer shorts, not really adapted to the practice of yoga and sports in general.

The important thing is to be comfortable in your movements. The advantage of yoga? No need for slippers, running shoes or fitness shoes! The practice is done barefoot on the yoga mat.

What to pay attention to when choosing clothes for yoga?

As with any physical activity, the most important thing to consider when choosing your sportswear is comfort!

The benefits of yoga (against back pain for example) are no longer to be demonstrated and you don't come to class to show off, but to properly do your sun salutations and work on your cardio.

If you want to keep some style, you can always choose a printed t-shirt, dark grey, mottled grey or purple. Both your top and bottom should be very comfortable.

There are more comfortable seamless underwear to warm up. If you prefer leggings for sports as well as for women, it's up to you, as long as you are free to move.

Your yoga equipment should emphasize your silhouette so that your teacher can correct your postures. But if your shirt needs to be adjusted, it shouldn't prevent you from breathing and relaxing!

Remember that the goal of yoga is to do the poses but also to hold them. Breathing is very important to successfully hold the postures in group classes or during online yoga.

That's why it's important to choose the right size: neither too big nor too small.

Forget about the ballet leotard or your basketball shorts to do a sequence easily!

The material is important to ensure breathability and quick drying. Put a breathable t-shirt and sports pants made of organic cotton (non-toxic) and elastane in your gym bag so they can go the distance.

Avoid lycra and viscose which make you sweat and prefer merino wool or smart materials. Don't skimp on quality. Friction can damage too fragile clothes.

Doing yoga means choosing clothes and accessories adapted to the sport. You wouldn't go to soccer with your basketball shoes on? Likewise, you wouldn't go to the pool without your swimsuit?

Some tips when choosing your men's yoga outfit

As soon as you are going to choose your men's yoga pants or your sweat shirt to put on after your meditation session, you need to check a few things:

Look in the mirror: do the clothes fit?
Practice some simple postures involving the upper and lower body: are the clothes too loose? Does the shirt slide over your head? On the contrary, does it come up because it's too tight?
Check that you can move without having to readjust your outfit: raise your arms, bend down to touch your toes, run on the spot?
If the outfit you've chosen doesn't fit, ask your yoga teacher for advice on where to find yoga and wellness clothing suitable for men,
Avoid hoodies and choose a breathable material.

The choice is often more limited than for women. Your sports store will not necessarily have a department dedicated to yoga on the men's side, but it will probably have a fitness equipment or pilates department that will do the trick.

At least try on a few outfits before ordering online if you want something with a yogi clothing stamp on it.

How many outfits should I bring for yoga ?

Whether you practice dynamic yoga or hatha yoga, you should bring several outfits in natural materials (organic cotton) with a fitted cut.

I start from the principle that you have to have three outfits:

• An outfit in his wardrobe,
• An outfit in its carry bag, ready to go to yoga,
• A dirty outfit, ready to be washed, because with our modern lives, we all know that it's sometimes difficult to be up to date from one week to the next (and it's even worse if you have two yoga classes a week).

The advantage is that a synthetic material will dry faster than cotton: choose a material that is not too thick and stretchy so that it washes faster and dries in a flash.

A single yoga mat is sufficient in my opinion. When choosing your mat, you have to think about the non-slip side and the ability to absorb moisture. Remember to sponge it down after each session for better hygiene.

What yoga accessories to carry?

Beyond your straight-cut sweatpants that fit snugly over your hips, your top and your mat, small equipment can be useful during your yoga class or your regular yoga class:

• A gourd to avoid dehydration,
• Sport socks: either to avoid slipping if you practice in socks, or to keep warm at the end of the session for savasana,
• Gaiters: even if they are generally women's clothing, they keep the ankles warm to avoid injury, especially in winter,
• A sweatshirt to cover up if you are cold,
• A small towel to mop up perspiration,
• A meditation cushion potentially to be more comfortable during meditations,
• Energy bars in case of unexpected fatigue.

The important thing is to have everything you might need during your session at hand. Think about tissues in the winter if you have a cold.

Check out a yoga blog or ask for advice in a yoga store. Experienced practitioners can give you tips on how to feel your best during your yoga session.
