Boost your happiness

We often take for granted the things we have. Yet in many other parts of the world, some people would feel blessed and happy if they could enjoy them daily.

If we just take a look around, we could find so much to be thankful for. Some of the practices that can help us cultivate the feeling of gratitude in our lives include:

1. GRATITUDE JOURNAL

Keeping a gratitude journal, where we write down all the things (or at least three things) we feel grateful for each day, can be a powerful reminder of the blessings we receive.

Writing down even simple things - like a delicious dinner we enjoyed, a warm home, a cup of tea or coffee, time spent with our loved one - can be a powerful practice to keep us in a positive frame of mind daily.

2. CREATE A LIST OF OPPORTUNITIES AND BLESSINGS

It is helpful to make a list of all the things we hold dear, things we usually take for granted, that are not available to many people in the world.

So many women on this planet still don't have the right or opportunity to get an education and many children can't go to school or university due to lack of financial resources. According to the WHO, 12.9% of the world's population (more than one billion people) is undernourished and will probably go to bed without having eaten.

Millions of people around the world do not have access to clean drinking water, running water or electricity, which we generally take for granted in Western countries.

Having a roof over our head, a warm room, a meal on our plate, a degree or an opportunity to go to college, electricity lighting up our home and cool water in the summer are all great reasons to be thankful every day.

3. CHANGE OUR PERCEPTION

Instead of feeling sad and frustrated about being single, we can look at this same situation from another perspective, such as the freedom of being able to choose our spouse and wait to find the right one. This simple change can help us move from a negative emotional state to one of gratitude.

In the same way, we can change our outlook on other things, such as the job we don't like or our living conditions.

When we catch ourselves complaining about housework, we can see it as a blessing to have our own home and, therefore, to clean with gratitude.

Instead of feeling annoyed at having to make dinner, we can be grateful that we can afford to do the shopping. We can also consider it a blessing in the modern age that we don't have to manually wash dishes or clothes.

When we find ourselves complaining about the job we hate or are bored in, we can be thankful that we have a job and a steady income that pays our bills.

We can also be thankful for the little things, like air conditioning in our offices, weekends to rest, or the fact that we don't experience harsh weather conditions or threats like many other people in the world.

There's nothing wrong with trying to do more and get ahead in life, but we can never be truly happy if we don't appreciate what we already have.
