When to listen to music during Yoga?

In today's world, unless you live in the desert, silence does not exist. We are constantly stimulated, and sometimes disturbed, by the sounds that surround us.

During a yoga class, you will have to learn how to deal with silence. If you are a beginner yogi, you may not be able to control your thoughts, which will take over and prevent you from taking full advantage of the stretching and letting go benefits generated by yoga practices. Music can help you by creating an atmosphere and releasing your emotions.

For other people, silence can create a break from the day that has just passed and allow you to approach your relaxation session in the best possible state of mind.

If you can focus on your body and breathing, without thinking about anything else, you can continue your session without music. If you feel that your mind is drifting and putting the day's work, the kids, or the errands you forgot to do back into a loop, music can help you focus on what you are feeling.

People who are accustomed to meditation or concentration may find it beneficial to practice yoga in total silence (think of the great Buddhist monks). As your yoga sessions progress, you may no longer feel the need to listen to music. An evolution is possible in your yoga practice. As you will have understood, there is no specific answer on the use of music, it is a personal matter!

If you practice yoga in a school (yoga Toulouse or elsewhere), the choice to play music during a class is the responsibility of the teacher. If there is none, nothing prevents you from asking him or her to do so, or from bringing your iPod and a speaker!

During a group yoga class, having music can be a hindrance to the teacher giving instructions for the different asana. On the other hand, alone at home or with a private Superprof class, don't hesitate to try the music option and see what consequences it has on your class.

A yoga session with music from natural sounds (flowing water, sounds of nature, waterfalls,....) and this kind of harmonious melody can help you to bring the final touch of well-being. But beware, you may fall asleep!
