Best morning affirmations

Morning affirmations can be either useless or incredibly impactful. It all depends on how we apply them.

On the one hand, we can use affirmations to put a little feel-good band-aid on deeper issues. (That's how most people approach them.) But we can also use affirmations to make space for ourselves, acknowledge our feelings and reprogram our unconscious thought patterns.

Affirmations can be either great expressions of self-love and empowerment or mechanisms for spiritual detour. There is perhaps no other personal development tool that is so polarizing.

If you are struggling with anxiety or depression, you will find in this article the morning affirmations that nourish, heal and invigorate. But first, what exactly is an affirmation?

WHAT IS AN AFFIRMATION?

Affirmations are simple but powerful statements we say to ourselves in difficult times. Literally, an affirmation is the practice of saying that something is true. As such, affirmations are statements of truth. When repeated with sincerity, affirmations can help us reprogram and remove negative unconscious beliefs we hold about ourselves, others and the world.

American author Louise Hay describes affirmations as follows:

"Simply put, everything we say or think is an affirmation. Everything you say to yourself, the dialogue in your head, is a stream of affirmations. These affirmations are messages to your subconscious mind that establish your thought and behavior patterns. " - LOUISE HAY

If all our thoughts are unconscious affirmations that shape our lives, consciously chosen affirmations contribute to change our way of thinking and therefore our behavior. And when our behavior changes, our lives also change profoundly.

WHY PRACTICE MORNING AFFIRMATIONS?

The reason why morning affirmations are so powerful is that our minds are more open, receptive and flexible at this time of day. In other words, if you want to have more impact on your unconscious mind, doing a morning affirmation ensures that your deepest mind gets the message. To learn more about morning routines, read our article on the magic morning mindset or how getting up early can improve your life.

As we move through the day, our minds become sharper and more analytical (which is not so suitable for affirmation practice). You can certainly say affirmations during the day, but that usually requires doubling or tripling the effort required for a morning affirmation. If morning affirmations aren't your thing, you can also try evening affirmations right before bed (your brain will usually be tired and receptive by then).

HOW TO PRACTICE THE FOLLOWING MORNING AFFIRMATIONS

Here are some things to keep in mind:

Affirmations are not about denying or avoiding what you are feeling. If you feel any discomfort, make room for it. You can even affirm, "I have a right to feel this way," then take a slow, deep breath and focus on your body. Try to feel your discomfort in your body without attributing a story to it. For example, if you are feeling anxious and stressed, notice how this feels in your body as a purely physical sensation.

Give yourself permission to sit with these feelings for a minute, at a minimum, undisturbed, without trying to attach ideas or thoughts to what is happening. Our minds tend to compound the depression and anxiety we feel by creating dramatic stories. Try to detach yourself from the story and focus only on the physical sensation. Often this simple practice is enough to reduce feelings of exhaustion or numbness (and often release them).

Say one affirmation at a time. You risk confusing your mind if you say too much. Stick to one affirmation that you really like. You can always change it the next day.

Choose a statement that you truly believe in. If you are extremely uncomfortable with a statement because it seems wrong, don't do it. Choose an affirmation that you resonate with or would dearly love to feel/live.

Say your affirmation sincerely. This is the secret ingredient to effective morning affirmations: infuse them with feelings such as desire, longing, hope, passion, etc. If you have trouble feeling anything while saying your affirmation, place a hand over your heart and close your eyes. This simple gesture often creates an energetic connection between your mind and your heart, making it easier to say powerful affirmations.

Use your mirror. Using a mirror greatly amplifies the power of your morning affirmations. Look yourself in the eye and say your affirmation with emotion. What's going on inside you? It's normal to have mixed feelings or even to feel hateful or self-hating. Just understand that your inner critic is part of you. Continue to make your chosen affirmation while accepting your feelings, and this practice will eventually become easier.

HERE ARE SOME QUESTIONS THAT COME UP OFTEN:

Should I say my affirmation out loud or in my head? The choice is yours. You don't have to choose one or the other, you can do both depending on what works for you. Personally, I like to say my affirmations (but in a low voice) because it makes them more "real".

Should I repeat my affirmations? Yes, repeat your affirmations in the morning up to ten times or more and you will send a powerful message to your subconscious.

What else can I do with these affirmations? Saying your affirmations is not the only way to use them. You can also write them on sticky notes and post them around your home, create art from them, create oracle cards, or use them as screensavers on your desk or phone. Be creative! There are many wonderful ways to reprogram your subconscious mind with affirmations.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask in the comments!

Anyone can do these affirmations.

However, I chose to highlight those who suffer from anxiety and depression for one important reason: these are the people who need morning affirmations the most.

Those who suffer from anxiety and/or depression can attest to the fact that it makes life extremely difficult at times. Even just getting out of bed and facing the day can seem like an insurmountable ordeal. When life feels empty or terrifying, we desperately need to feel a sense of empowerment. Affirmations can be a simple way to regain that hope and empowerment.

I'm not claiming that morning affirmations will fix everything, but they can help you feel better, even if only in a small way. Sometimes feeling a little better can make all the difference.
